Mini Series: Part 6 “The GCSE Years – Pressure and Pivots”

The GCSE years often come with a sense of seriousness — a message that “this really counts.” For many young people, this is the first time they’re expected to make decisions about their future, manage deadlines, and perform under pressure.

It’s a lot. Especially when you consider the hormonal, emotional, and identity changes happening at the same time.

This stage can feel like a pressure cooker — where one minute they’re ready to take on the world, and the next they’re overwhelmed, confused, or shut down.

What it might feel like for the young person:

“Everyone expects me to know what I’m doing… but I don’t.”

“If I mess this up, I’ll ruin my future.”

“I can’t keep up.”

“Why do I feel so stressed all the time?”

They’re balancing schoolwork, revision, friendships, family expectations, and their own emerging sense of self. And many feel like they’re not allowed to get it wrong.

What you might notice:

Heightened anxiety or emotional outbursts

Lack of motivation or overworking – either can be signs of stress

Changes in sleep, eating habits, or general wellbeing

Self-comparison, fear of failure, or frequent “I can’t” language

Withdrawal from family or pushing back against rules

Even if they don’t ask for help, they often need it more than ever.

How you can help:

🌿 Keep the focus on effort, not perfection – remind them that doing their best is enough

🌿 Be a safe place, not another source of pressure – offer reassurance more than advice

🌿 Encourage breaks and downtime – rest is essential, not optional

🌿 Support emotional regulation – whether that’s through tapping, movement, nature, or creativity

🌿 Use EFT for exam stress or confidence wobbles – try:

“Even though I feel overwhelmed, I’m doing my best and that’s enough.”

“Even though I’m scared to fail, I know my worth isn’t based on grades.”

🌿 Normalise not knowing – help them see that many people figure things out later, and that it’s okay not to have all the answers right now

A gentle reminder for the young person:

“You are more than your grades. This is just one chapter of your life — and there’s so much more ahead of you.”
