Starting Reception is often a child’s first real step into the world without their grown-ups. For many, it’s the beginning of full-time education, and while it can be exciting and fun, it’s also a huge emotional shift — for both the child and the family.
What it might feel like for the child:
“Where am I going?”
“Will they come back for me?”
“What if I need help and don’t know who to ask?”
Even confident, happy children can feel unsettled. They’re entering a new place, with new adults, new rules, and a whole sea of new faces.
What you might notice:
Clinginess or tears at drop-off
Tiredness, meltdowns, or more emotional behaviour at home
Regressing a little (wanting help with dressing, more cuddles, etc.)
Difficulty sleeping or increased anxiety
This is all completely normal. Their nervous system is doing its best to process change.
How you can help:
🌼 Create calm morning and evening routines – predictability builds security.
🌼 Talk through what to expect – use stories, play, or pictures.
🌼 Name feelings with gentle language – “It’s okay to feel nervous about something new.”
🌼 Short and sweet goodbyes – reassure them you’ll be back and follow through.
🌼 Use tools like EFT tapping – even just tapping together and saying “We’re safe” can regulate emotions.
A gentle reminder for the child:
“It’s okay to feel unsure. You’re learning something new, and that takes courage. You’re doing a great job, even if it feels hard right now.”
